Teat Care: Mare Care for Horses' Health and Comfort

Mare Teat Care

Some mares need their teats wiped clean every day. They get grimy or crusty. In this pic, you can see all the crevices where smegma would build up. Dirty teats can hurt, making mares defensive, kick, rub their tails, etc.

You don't want to put anything on skin that would strip oils or attract dirt.  Handy wipes can be drying. A clean cloth or paper towel damp with water will do.

Once clean, daily grooming with a soft dandy brush or towel can keep teats in good condition- skin supple and resilient.

If you have not been keeping up on your mare's teats, she may be sore. The flank is a vulnerable area. Let her know you are approaching and go easy.

Lucky Braids Handy Salve can help soothe skin, soften and dissolve smegma. The All-In-One Shampoo cleans and conditions skin for comfy teats.  ~Ruthann
